Marco Moscarelli, MD, MD(Res), PhD, is a consultant cardiac surgeon and senior scientific researcher at GVM Care & Research in Palermo, Italy. His work lies at the intersection of structural heart disease, transcatheter valve therapies, advanced cardiovascular imaging, and translational cardiovascular science.
He obtained his medical degree from the University of Rome Tor Vergata in 2001, where he also completed his residency in cardiac surgery in 2010. From 2010 to 2015, he trained in the United Kingdom as a clinical and research fellow at Hammersmith Hospital and the National Heart and Lung Institute (NHLI), Imperial College London. During this period, he completed a Doctor of Medicine (Research) [MD(Res)] focused on ischemic remote preconditioning (RIPC), in collaboration with the University of Bristol.
In 2016, he returned to Italy and joined GVM Care & Research—one of Europe’s largest cardiac surgery providers—with the objective of developing an integrated multi-centric research network combining clinical excellence, translational investigation, and methodological rigor. He subsequently earned a PhD from Maastricht University with a thesis entitled Advancements in Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery.
Prof. Moscarelli has a particular interest in catheter-based structural heart interventions and serves as a certified proctor for Abbott’s transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) program. His research group has led and published multiple clinical trials and translational studies in minimally invasive surgery, structural heart interventions, prosthesis performance, and evidence synthesis.
Alongside his clinical and translational work, he has developed advanced expertise in biostatistics and statistical programming using R, with a particular focus on survival analysis, individual patient data meta-analysis, predictive modelling, and interpretable machine learning applied to cardiovascular medicine. He is the author of Biostatistics With “R”: A Guide for Medical Doctors, a methodological text aimed at strengthening statistical reasoning among clinicians and promoting reproducible, data-driven medical research.
He is an Honorary Lecturer at Imperial College London and at the University of Bristol. Since 2019, he has served as Associate Editor of the Journal of Cardiac Surgery. He currently serves as Editor of the European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (EJCTS) and as Associate Editor for Interdisciplinary Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, where he also contributes as a statistical consultant.
He has authored over 150 peer-reviewed publications in international scientific journals and remains actively engaged in methodological education and the integration of interpretable artificial intelligence into cardiovascular research and clinical decision-making.
